Working hand creams repair the damage. None of them prevent it.
Read the ingredient list on the hand cream trade workers actually buy. Glycerin, stearic acid, paraffin, mineral oil, dimethicone. Every one of those is there to rebuild a cracked barrier, and they do it well. Not one of them blocks a photon of ultraviolet light. The product is sold to the group with the highest measured occupational UV exposure of any profession, and it offers them no sun protection at all.

People who use sunscreen at all put it on their face. The backs of the hands and the forearms take the same eight hours of sun and almost never get covered, which is exactly where dermatology finds solar lentigines, the flat brown spots that arrive in your forties and stay.
Those are also the hands doing the gripping, washing and scraping, so anything you put there has to survive the work. That is why this is a cream and not a lotion.

Zinc oxide
The mineral filter, and the only active in the formula. It sits on the surface and reflects both UVA and UVB, which is what earns the broad spectrum designation. Mineral filters do not need twenty minutes to activate, so cover starts as soon as it is rubbed in.
Glycerin and stearic acid
The same pairing that made working hand creams work in the first place. Glycerin pulls water into the outer layer, stearic acid holds it there. We did not reinvent this part, we kept it.
Niacinamide
A form of vitamin B3, well documented in dermatology for the appearance of uneven tone. It is here for the brown spots that years of outdoor work leave across the backs of the hands.
Panthenol
Provitamin B5, added for the knuckle splits and the raw patches under a glove line. It absorbs without leaving the slick film that makes a tool handle turn in your grip.
Not in the tube
No added fragrance, no dye, no drying alcohol. Nothing that turns the tube into cologne when you are already covered in sawdust, and nothing that stings a split knuckle.
The honest part
No sunscreen protects for a full shift on one application. Water resistance is rated at 80 minutes. Reapply every two hours, and again after heavy sweating, washing up or towelling off. A tube used correctly runs out faster than one that sits in the glovebox.

Backs of both hands, wrists, and up the forearm as far as your sleeve stops. Most people use too little; if it disappears instantly, add more.

Break, lunch, and any time you have washed up or sweated through. Water resistance holds for 80 minutes, not for the shift.

This one is for the cracking rather than the sun. Overnight is when the repair base does most of its work on split skin.

Will my hands slip on a tool after using it?
No. It is formulated as a cream rather than a lotion for exactly this reason, and it absorbs matte. Give it thirty seconds before you pick up a hammer or a wheel, the same as any barrier cream.
Does zinc oxide leave a white cast?
A faint one on first application, which is the honest answer for any mineral sunscreen. It fades as it settles, and on hands and forearms nobody is looking anyway. If you want zero cast on your face, this is not the tube for that.
Can I use it on my face and neck too?
You can, and plenty of people do on the back of the neck and the ears. It is a heavier texture than a face sunscreen because it has to survive gloves and tool grips, so it will feel like more product than you are used to.
How fast will a tube go if I reapply properly?
Around six weeks of full outdoor days at three applications, and considerably longer through the winter. Buying two is the usual pattern: one lives in the truck, one in the tool bag.
Will it fade the spots I already have?
Niacinamide is included to help with the appearance of uneven tone, and daily sun protection stops new marks accumulating. Existing solar lentigines are a dermatology conversation, and any product promising to erase them is overselling.
Buying it for someone who will not use it?
It is the most common reason this gets bought. The tube looks like something from the tool aisle rather than a bathroom shelf, which is usually the difference between it being used and it sitting in a drawer. If it still goes unused, send it back within thirty days.
