Post-shave balm for men 60+ · 3.3 fl oz (100 ml)

Soothing wears off in minutes. The lipids shaving took are still gone.

Every post-shave balm on the shelf calms the sting. Almost none of them put back the barrier lipids the blade and the foam strip away — and at sixty that barrier was already thinner. BarrierGlide carries ceramide, urea and NMF for the rebuilding, allantoin and panthenol for the calm, and no fragrance at all.

0% FRAGRANCE  ·  CERAMIDE 3  ·  LOW-EFFORT PUMP  ·  NO ALCOHOL STING

Calming the sting is not the same as rebuilding the barrier.

A razor takes skin off mechanically; the foam strips lipids chemically. That is a double hit, every morning, on a barrier that has been thinning for decades. Botanical extracts make the aftermath feel better. They do not replace what came off.

What most balms do

Soothe the surface for a few minutes

Aloe, honey, licorice, arnica, oat. Genuinely calming, and worth having. But nothing on that list is a lipid, so by mid-morning the tightness is back and the barrier is still short of what it lost.

What this one adds

Put the missing lipids and water back

Ceramide 3 restocks the lipid layer itself. Urea at a face-appropriate level and NMF components hold water where the skin can no longer hold it alone. Allantoin and panthenol still handle the calm — they are just not doing the whole job by themselves.

~30%
Fewer lipids in the outer layer of mature skin than in young skin, before the razor touches it
32%
More water lost through the skin after barrier damage over sixty than in younger skin — 45.0 against 34.2 g/m²/h

Go and read the balm you own now.

Turn the bottle over and look for the word fragrance in the ingredient list. Plenty of balms sold for sensitive skin still carry it, and you are applying it to skin one minute after a blade has been over it. That is the moment skin is least able to shrug off an irritant.

This one has none. Not a masking scent, not an essential oil, not a natural fragrance. It smells faintly of nothing, which is the point.

No fragrance · no alcohol · no essential oils

Four working ingredients. Nothing in there to make it smell nice.

  • Ceramide 3
The lipid your skin makes less of every decade. This is the part that rebuilds rather than covers.
  • Urea, face level
Two to five per cent, far below a heel cream. Holds water and helps the ceramide get where it is needed.
  • Glycerin + PCA
The skin's own natural moisturising factors, topped up from outside because your own supply has dropped.
  • Allantoin + panthenol
The calm, for the first few minutes after the razor. Supporting cast, not the whole formula.

It is a balm, not an oil and not a splash. It goes on matte, absorbs in under a minute and leaves no shine on the jaw for the rest of the day.

Straight after the razor, on skin still damp.

BarrierGlide bottle with strop, brush and folded towels

01  Rinse cool and leave the skin damp. Cold water, no scrubbing with the towel. Pat once — damp skin gives the urea and glycerin water to hold on to.

02  One pump, both hands, no rubbing. The bottle stands on its own so you can press the pump one-handed. Warm it between the palms and press it over the jaw and neck.

03  Every shave, and judge it in a month. The comfort is same-day; lipids rebuild slowly, so give it four weeks — that is the window the research used.

Built for wet hands and stiff fingers.

Most balm packaging is designed to photograph well. This one is designed to be opened in a steamy bathroom by a hand that does not grip the way it did at forty.

· A wide pump that needs almost no force, instead of a small cap you have to twist.

· Textured sides so it does not slip out of a wet hand onto a tiled floor.

· A flat base that stands unaided, so one hand does the pumping and the other does nothing.

· Directions printed at a size you can read without reaching for your glasses.

A balm is not a diagnosis.

This is barrier care for dryness, tightness and irritation after shaving. If your skin is cracking open, bleeding, weeping or staying inflamed for days, that is a condition and it wants a dermatologist rather than a better balm. Stop using it if it stings, and see someone.

Questions we get

Will it sting on a fresh nick?
There is no alcohol and no fragrance in it, which is what usually causes that. Urea can be felt faintly on an open cut, so go around the nick and let it close first.

Is it greasy? I shave before work.
No. It is a matte balm, absorbed in well under a minute, and a shirt collar goes on over it without a mark.

Electric shaver, or only wet shaving?
Both. An electric head abrades the surface differently but the barrier loses lipids either way.

Can I use it on days I do not shave?
Yes, morning or night, as a plain face moisturiser. Nothing in it is shave-specific.

I am forty-five, not sixty. Is it wrong for me?
It will work perfectly well. We wrote it for sixty and over because that is where the barrier repair actually matters and nobody was formulating for it.

How long does a bottle last?
One pump a shave, so 3.3 fl oz runs roughly three months of shaving every day — more if you shave every other day.

Rebuild the barrier. Read the label.

Ceramide, urea and NMF, no fragrance at all, one pump after every shave.
